Shared Staff Services
How this innovative program was born!

When staff from two environmental organizations came to the Center for Nonprofits with high volunteer management needs but limited budgets, the Center’s former Executive Director Angie Sledge was eager to help them find a solution.

After recruiting another environmental organization and securing funding, a shared staffing program was born. Sarah Quattrochi was hired in October, 2006, as a Center for Nonprofits employee exclusively serving the Lookout Mountain Conservancy, Reflection Riding Arboretum & Botanical Garden, and the Tennessee River Gorge trust as a volunteer coordinator.

Sarah serves each organization by recruiting volunteers, planning work days and on-going activities, assisting with special events, and taking the time to recognize all of the hard work that the volunteers give to each organization in order to help them accomplish their missions more efficiently and effectively.

The innovative nature of this collaboration has not gone unnoticed. The Chattanooga Time Free Press published an article entitled “One-size manager fits 3 local nonprofits” describing the project. Besides increased media attention, the organization’s executive directors happily report the success of the project has surpassed their expectations. One said he feels as though he has hired a full-time coordinator!

The shared staff project, which is now complete, was very successful. Sarah was hired full time by the Tennessee River Gorge Trust. Her new position as Outreach and Education Director encompasses her work with TGRT volunteers as well as including educational and community outreach responsibilities. The collaboration between the three environmental organizations is expected to continue in the future.

This program wouldn’t have be possible without the support from the Benwood Foundation, Community Foundation, Lyndhurst Foundation, and Tucker Foundation.

Due to the program’s success, the Center for Nonprofits is considering similar ventures and compiling a list of interested organizations. If you are interested in shared staff positions that will save your organization money and time, while providing the full-range of services, contact the Center for Nonprofits at 432-752-0300 or email sheilamoore@cnpchatt.org.
